IN THE GARDEN AT ARASH’S HOUSE
THE SUN IS BEGINNING TO SET

There is a small garden at the back of the house, some bushes and shrubs are planted along the wooden fence on both sides. Rose bushes and other flowers thrive in the garden. The sitting room door that opens into the garden is ajar, a few garden chairs can be seen around a table placed on the stone covered patio area. Arash is wearing a brown jumper and is sitting on a chair facing the garden. A bottle of vodka, a bottle of lemonade and a bowl of crisps and nuts can be seen on the table in front of him. Sarah is sitting across from him wearing comfortable clothes. They are both holding a glass.
SARAH: Turns to Arash as she takes a sip of vodka.
“I drink to you and the children‟s health.”
ARASH: Raises his glass
“To you and the kids. You are all I h
ave in this world.”
SARAH: “I have some very good news for you.”
As she smiles at Arash
“Guess what it is. Close your eyes, I want to show you something.”
Arash smiles and nods in agreement. Sarah quickly enters the sitting room. After a brief moment she peeks out of the sitting room door.
SARAH: “Ready? Then close your eyes.”
Arash closes his eyes. Sarah enters the garden holding a glass frame and a large envelope. She hands a nicely framed commendation letter to Arash.
SARAH: “Don‟t open your eyes yet.”
She quickly takes out a tissue out of the box and wipes the frame.

ARASH AND SARAH’S HOUSE
THE STUDY
The study is a small room with a small desk and a chair placed in the centre. A computer and a lamp are set on the table. A hand-made Persian carpet is spread on the floor. A bookshelf stands next to the wall. A cabinet can be seen next to the bookcase. Arash opens the door to the cabinet, takes out a large cardboard box and places it on the desk. He looks at his commendation letter that is hanging in a frame. He notices an envelope containing a greeting card at the corner of the desk. The writing on the envelope says; „To my dear father‟. Arash opens the envelope and takes out the greeting card and reads it.
ARASH: “I congratulate you for the commendation that you received. Congratulations from the bottom of my heart. I am proud of you.”
Arash places the card back on the desk and delves deep into his thoughts. ARASH: “I have a terrible headache. I feel down. As if I have depression or something. What a strange dream.”
“It seemed so real. As if I was in a deep trance. Everything seemed so real to me. Even as we speak, when I close my eyes I could see those asylum seekers‟ angry faces. I am sure this nightmare stems from a subconscious conflict that is brewing deep within me. I feel that two opposing beliefs within my subconscious are pulling at each other. I must choose between them tonight. Make a firm decision. Otherwise these completely opposing forces will tear me apart. I will go completely mental. I feel as if I am at the cross roads. I must choose one of these two creeds and totally suppress and destroy the other, forever. What has put me in this predicament is doubts and indecision. No one is more responsible for this than Sassan Yazdani

and Nazanine Afshar. This couple managed to cause an upheaval in my psyche. I am not sure about anything any longer. But, tonight I must choose the path I will take. It‟s been many years since I hid and put away this box that is full of mementoes from my past, reminders of whom I used to be and where I come from, connecting me to my roots and essence. So that I could be true to my work, I chose to live in an area of London, where you do not find many Iranians, because I was always afraid of being obligated to do something that is in conflict with my commitments and work ethics.”
“I always tried to deal with the issue impartially, just like a judge would. Under no circumstances was I ever influenced by these asylum seekers sobs and tears. Whatever they said, I translated verbatim. Even when just a yes or no answer could have changed the outcome and hence their destinies. I could have told them what sort of documents to present to the court and how to present their cases to be successful. I dare confess that I could have made it possible for the court to grant Rafat Shabani asylum had I slightly altered some of the things that he had to say in court. Had I not translated every contradicting statement that he made I could have prevented him from being deported from this country and sent to the gallows in Iran for his execution. The question is this, when it comes to a matter of life and death for a fellow countryman, what credence is there left for my work obligations?”
He takes a deep breath and continues.
“I feel that I was so deeply drowned inside my translating work and the ethical and legal obligations that it entails that I don‟t believe that even I could go back in time, I could still not translate Rafat‟s word any differently than I did at that time.”

“At the same time, a guilty feeling takes over me whenever I think of this poor refugee. The nightmare I had tonight is the result of this ongoing conflict within my heart and soul.”
Arash takes the letters out of the box. He puts them on the desk. He takes a bunch of photographs that have a rubber band around them out as well. He puts them on the desk and begins to stare at them. Sarah quietly opens the door to the study and enters. She looks at Arash for a few moments.
SARAH: “What are you doing darling? I was worried about you. Why are you going through these at this time of night? Leave it till tomorrow. Come and rest for a while, you have to be in court first thing tomorrow.”
ARASH: “I was looking at these pictures. Pictures of my childhood up to the time that I came to England. It‟s been 27-28 years since I last looked at these. I want to remind myself of who I am, where I come from and where my roots lie.”
SARAH: “Well, couldn‟t you do this tomorrow? When you come back from work? There will always be time for looking at childhood pictures and old letters. But right now, what you need is rest. You really need it badly my dear.”
ARASH: As he looks at some of the pictures
“I think these pictures will be a great help in making me decide on what I am going to do tomorrow.”
He points to a picture.
...........“This is the last family picture I ever took with my mother and father, God rest their souls.”

Zeenat Moosa talks to the author about his
debut novel
     


Massoud Kermani’s debut novel Visa highlights the highly-charged, politically controversial and deeply emotional subject of asylum seekers entering Britain today.
The author himself left Iran as a youth, subsequently moving to the United Kingdom where he soon settled and married. He returned to Iran just before the recent elections, an event which renewed his interest in asylum seekers and politics. Much of his writing has been influenced by his own experiences in his homeland.
Zeenat Moosa speaks to the author.
For those of us who haven't heard about you - tell us about Massoud Kermani
I left Iran before the Islamic Revolution and came to England to continue my education. I currently live in the South of England.
Tell us about your debut novel Visa, what is about
VISA is a book about an Iranian/British translator called ‘Arash’ who works at the Courts of Appeal, and who translates for mostly Iranian Asylum Seekers who have been turned down for refugee status by the Immigration department of the home office.
How did you come up with the title
The title VISA is in my opinion the most suitable, as when you read the book it delves into the lives of the characters and their journeys, and often dangerous situations they find themselves in, in Iran, and their struggle to reach England where there is democracy and hopefully a permanent ‘VISA’ to remain.
This is your debut novel - did you always want to be a writer
This is my debut novel. However, when I was still living in Iran, as a young teenager, I was very much involved in writing scripts for plays, and theatre, when I was at High School.
Arash, the main character in the book fleas Iran coming to England to further his education. Would you say Arash's character is based around you and your own experiences of leaving Iran and coming to the United Kingdom
Arash does not flee Iran, he simply comes here to continue his education. This is the only similarity there is between Arash and myself.
Visa focuses mainly on the issue of immigration - what are your thoughts about immigration in the United Kingdom
I think the UK immigration system is a very fair system. This is something that comes across on the book VISA. However, as is proved in the book, you must have crucial documentary evidence to back up your story. Otherwise, everyone who comes into the country can fabricate a reason for getting a permanent VISA.
What book are you reading at the moment
At the moment I am reading ‘The King of Tarts’ by John Grisham
What would you cite as your favourite book
My favourite book is ‘The Appeal’ by John Grisham
And the author you would most like to meet
There are many authors I would like to meet, but probably I would most like to meet John Grisham
Any plans for a second novel


There are plans for a second novel but at the moment I am in the very early stages of putting the book together in my mind before I actually put pen to paper.

قرار است در تابستان سال اینده میلادی  فیلم سینمایی ویزا بر اساس کتاب داستانی ویزا ساخته شود تهیه کننده این فیلم مسعود کرمانی است و مراحل اولیه ساخت این فیلم خانوادگی و اجتماعی که بار سیاسی هم دارد انجام شده و سناریو  فیلم توسط نویسنده  کتاب نوشته شده ودر مراحل پایانی قرار دارد .
  فصل تابستان بهترین زمان برای شروع ساخت این فیلم خواهد بود و مراحل پیش تولید در می 2011 شروع خواهد شد  .

Fleeing Iran when he was just an adolescent in order to further his education and study at university, Arash Vaziri emigrates to Britain where he has lived ever since. Gaining a job in the Home Office as a Farsi speaking translator for asylum seekers hoping to remain in the country, Arash is confronted with the harsh realities of immigration on a daily basis. New clients enter his life in the form of Sassan and Nazanine, who have fled Iran in desperate fear of being stoned to death for their modern beliefs and who have entered the United Kingdom illegally. Arash quickly becomes suspicious when he sees his new clients chatting informally before they go into court to plead their cases; could he be right in thinking that perhaps their claims are actually fabricated in order for them to qualify for welfare benefits? As the story progresses, we witness Arash struggle to reconcile his position as an Iranian by birth and as British citizen by law, caught in the midst of agonizing legal proceedings and moral turmoil.

A confident and articulate novel, Visa examines the whole spectrum of immigration from the viewpoint of those individuals who are on the frontline, consumed by this challenging and sprawling process. Arash has the unenviable task of witnessing the hopelessness of the asylum seekers without being able to play an active part in their case. The writer Massoud Kermani shows us the wider impact of immigration, and how it affects the professionals who are part of the system that the migrants fear and resent. Visa is a novel that does not judge any of its characters or their situations, but rather allows the reader to draw their own conclusions based upon Kermani's open, honest and informed writing.

نگاهی به اثر قابل تقدیر ویزا

ویزا اثری بسیار تاثیر گذار و با احساس است که از دل نویسنده برامده و لاجرم بر دل می نشیند و تاثری بس شگفت انگیز برخوانده دارد ،اثر نگاهی متفاوت به وقایع ناخوشایند وبسیار دردناک ایران اسلامی دارد. 
داستان انچنان برروح وروان خواننده تاثیر می گذارد که بعد از خواندن ساعت ها حتی بیشتر حوادث و ماجراها را جلوی چشمش مجسم میکند. گونه روایی نوشته مسعودکرمانی آنقدر جذاب و پرکشش است که خوانده را به عمق ماجرا برده و او را درگیر وقایع میکند و درگیری روحی و هم ذات پنداری را سبب می شه ،مطالعه کتاب ادم را به تفکر وتعمق به چگونه زخ دادن این اتفاقات وماجراها وا می دارد .
 این سوال پیش می اید که آیا این ماجرا فقط داستان است یا واقعی است گر چه نویسنده در شروع نوشته تاکید بر آن دارد که همه این داستان تخیلیه، واقعی نیست ولی روند داستان و حوادث از واقعی بودن داستان حکایت میکند .
مسعود کرمانی در خلق اثر موفق است ،چرا ؟  چون وی بگونه ای ماجرا را توصیف وتصویر می کند که نا خودآگاه ذهن خواننده همه وقایع را با چشمش می بیند و نتیجه ای وهم آلود از زندگی بد و عذاب آور مردم شریف  ایران دریافت میکند.ویزا سخنی دارد که حرمت ها را می شکنند و خاموش جان انسان ها را با دست خون الود خود می گیرند ، به عیان همه چیز  رابا همه فراز و فرود هایش میشکنند.
 یک داستان مستند ومتحرکننده از انسان های مظلوم ولی سربلند جامعه کنونی ایران  است که با صداقت و بدون نیرنگ وریا بازگو میشود.
آرش وزیری ونازنین افشار با ساسان یزدانی دو قطب متضاداند که شکل گیری داستان ویزا را رقم میزنند واین تقابل باعث پیدا شدن ماجرایی جذاب وواقعی می شود و تاثرگذاری ان هم از این جهت است که همه اتفاقات واقعی و ملموس برای خواننده ایرانی است.
نازنین ترس ازاعدام وگریزان از جهنم جمهوری اسلامی و برای نجات جانش و زندگی اش با شوهرش ساسان مجبور به فرارمی شود و برای رسیدن به جایی امن که در امان باشد ،به انگلستان می اید و باهم در تلاش اند  تا اجازه ماندن را کسب نمایند.
آرش مترجمی متعهد به کارش وقانون است ، که مدتی طولانی در امر مترجمی در اداره مهاجرت انگلستان بکارمشغول است و سعی داشته تا از قوانین اداره مهاجرت انگلیس تخطی نکند و در نیکی و خوش نامی زبانزد دیگران و قابل احترام ومطمئن در کارش باشد واکنون آرش مترجم ، با ساسان و نازنین دراین نبرد به مصاف هم رفته اند و هر دو برای رسیدن به حق طلبی و راهی  درست ،همواره در تلاش اند،  دریکسو قانون ودر سوی دیگر احساس ، انسانیت وترحم قرار دارد، و آنها به تقابل باهم برخواسته اند.
آرش با این خصوصیات وایده در این نبرد کم می آورد و موجب تضادی درونی بین خو د وحرفه اش می گردد و رفته رفته در درونش تلاطم و غوغا میشود که به کدام سو برود، داستان نازنین در درون او انقلابی به وجود می اورد  و حال او به دنبال راه و چاره ای است تا خود را رها سازد و سرانجام رسیدن به اصل و ریشه اش را بر گزیده و رها و ازاد  بسوی زندگی می رود، به نظر  می رسد نویسنده  سعی کرده تا هردو شخصیت داستانش را برای رها شدن از قید وبندها ، نشان دهد و تلاش انها را هم نیک می شمرد  .
  ارش رها ازقید وبند اداره وکار ونازنین رها از قید وبند قوانین مدهبی و قرون وسطی ایران اسلامی.
این اثر در خور توجه از جریانات و حوادث درون ایران خصوصا بعداز انتخابات 22 خرداد 1388 نشات گرفته است . درون و بیرون وقایع بشکلی واقع گرایانه به رشته تحریر درامده وگونه هایی متفاوت از برخوردها و انگیزه های روانی و روحی ادم ها را مد نظر دارد وراهگشایی می کند رسیدن انسان ها به موفقیت از ابعاد مختلف و این خود از زیبایی های دیگراین نوشته پرمحتوا است. ویزا برای هر ایرانی قابل لمس است وجا داردعنوان کنم که مطالعه این نوشته تاثیر گذار برای هر ایرانی میهن دوست ضروری است.

پارکی در تهران

چهارشنبه - ساعت حدود 3 بعد از ظهر

(خورشید در حال غروب کردن است. پارک تقریباً خلوت به نظر می‌رسد. ساسان غم زده و بدون هدف راه می‌رود. در گوشه‌ای زیر درختی بزرگ چند نیمکت قرار دارد. ساسان روی یکی ‌از آنها می‌نشیند و از دور به پسر بچه‌ها که در حال بازی فوتبال هستند خیره می‌شود. در همین هنگام حاج آقا رستمی که آخوندی است حدودأ شصت ساله با ریش توپی ‌و عبای خردلی و عمامه مشکی، ‌انگار که ساسان را از راه دور تعقیب می‌کرده است، نزدیک می‌شود و روی نیمکت دیگری که روبروی ساسان است می‌نشیند. دو پاسدار همراه حاج آقا رستمی در بیست قدمی‌توقف کرده‌اند و به آنها می‌نگرند. ساسان یکدفعه متوجه می‌شود و وحشت زده از جا می‌پرد. به لکنت زبان افتاده است.

رستمی: (با لبخند) السلام و علیکم و رحمت الله آقای یزدانی عزیز! شما حالتان بهتر است یا احوالتان؟!

ساسان: (سعی‌می‌کند بر خود مسلط شود) سلام از ماست حاج آقا... سلام عرض می‌کنم... من ابدأ متوجه حضور حضرتعالی نشدم حاج آقا. منو ببخشین...

رستمی: خواهش دارم آقای یزدانی شما بفرمائید بنشینین. (ساسان به آهستگی می‌نشیند) ما که سعادت نصیبمان نشد در مدرسه به حضور حضرت عالی نائل شویم، شما را در پارک پیدا کردیم. (ساسان با ترس به دو پاسدار نگاه می‌کند. حاج آقا رستمی که متوجه وحشت ساسان شده است با خوشرویی و لبخند) چی شده آقای یزدانی؟ شما ناراحت و مضطرب به نظر میرسین (ساسان به دو پاسدار که در عرض پیاده رو کنار هم ایستاده‌اند خیره شده است) انشاالله حضور برادرا باعث اضطراب خاطر مبارک نشده باشه؟ (با لبخند و تمسخر) البته این که هیچ مانعی نداره آقای یزدانی عزیز! الان می‌گویم که از ما فاصله بگیرن (با اشاره دست حاج آقا رستمی پاسداران از محل دور می‌شوند) حالا بهتر شد؟ (به ساسان نگاه می‌کند) ما حالا می‌تونیم بدون رودرواسی و کمی هم ‌خصوصی درد دل کنیم شما که موافق هستین آقای یزدانی؟ (حاج آقا به دو پاسداری که از آنها دور شده اند نگاه می‌کند) وجود این پاسداران جان بر کف است که امروز این آرامش و آسایش و امنیت را خداوند به این ملت مسلمان ارزانی داشته. شما تصورش را بکنین اگه وجود این قوانین الهی و ما قضات شرع و این پاسداران مجری عدالت نباشه چه اتفاقی برای این ملت مظلوم می‌افته؟ امروز زیر هر یک از این درختای این پارک یک عمل لواط با یکی از همین جوانهای مردم (با دست به جوانانی که در پارک فوتبال بازی می‌کنند اشاره می‌کند) صورت می‌گرفت. اگه حکم سنگسار رو پروردگار همه عالم از طریق پیامبرانش برای این ملت مسلمان به ارمغان نیاورده بود، زنان هرزه در هر گوشه و کناری با عابران مرد، مثل سگ جفتگیری می‌کردن. وحشت از اجرای این قوانین الهیه که ما امروز این صحنه‌های مخوف جهنمی رو لااقل در کوچه و خیابان و بازار نمی‌بینیم. (ساسان به زمین خیره شده است) بیا با هم دور این پارک قدم بزنیم. (ساسان با شک و تردید به او نگاه می‌کند) پاشو! (ساسان ازروی نیمکت بلند می‌شود و هر دو به راه می‌افتند) آقای یزدانی خداوند متعال شعور مطلق را از آن طبقه برتر یعنی ما روحانیون با تقوی کرده. ما قضات شرع مثل یک باغبان هستیم که وظیفه داریم آن علفهای هرز را که در میان بوته‌های گل و درختای میوه روئیده شناسایی کنیم و همه رو از بیخ و بن ریشه کن کنیم که بقیه بتونن خوب رشد کنن. نگاه کنین! (به باغچه‌ای که پر از گل شاداب است اشاره می‌کند) این یک مثال زنده است. یک علف هرز مابین این گلها نیست. یعنی نمی‌تونست باشه. در غیر این صورت این گلها اینطور شاداب و سر سبز نبودن. ما روحانیون و قضات شرع مثل چوپانانی هستیم برای حفظ جان گله. اگه یکی دو تا از گوسفندها به مرض واگیرداری مبتلا شدن شناسائی می‌کنیم و به سرعت اونا رو از میون می‌بریم. (سکوت برقرار می‌شود هر دو به وسط میدان گردی می‌آیند) آقای یزدانی! متاسفانه باید به شما بگویم که شما با عیالتان به یک مرض خطرناک واگیردار، به یک نوع طاعون مبتلا شدین که هیچ علاجی برای شما وجود نداره. شما سلامت زندگی زناشویی رو در این جامعه اسلامی با مفسده و فحشا به خطر انداختین. فساد در ‌وجود شما مثل سرطان ریشه گذاشته و شما هم تبدیل به یک غده سرطانی شدین. (حاج آقا رستمی با عصایش دو دایره کوچک وسط میدان می‌کشد) برای شما دو تا چاله وسط همین میدان باید کنده بشه به همین قطر و به عمق یک متر و نیم (به قد و بالای ساسان را نگاه می‌کند. ساسان ترسیده نگاه می‌کند) آقای یزدانی! دخترم حاج فاطمه خانم، جگرگوشه‌ام، از من ایراد گرفته که ای پدر بزرگوار! شما چرا در اجرای حکم عدالت و قصاص جدیت کافی بخرج نمیدین؟ این ظلم و اجحافی که این روزها در مورد ما میشه اگر ادامه پیدا کنه منجر به متلاشی شدن زندگی زناشویی‌مون میشه؛ شما چرا کاری نمی‌کنین؟ به او گفتم دختر عزیزم در مورد اجرای عدالت و قصاص ابدا عجله نباید کرد. اول باید یک پرونده قطور که تمامی اعمال یک مفسد فی الارض در آن بدون کم و کاست ضبط شده باشه تشکیل داد بعد اونو روانه دادگاه عدل الهی کرد.

ساسان: (به لرزه افتاده است) منظورتان را خوب نمی‌فهمم حاج آقا!

رستمی: آیا آن مراسم با شکوهی را که دو سال پیش در ملاءعام در بردسیر انجام شد شما از یاد بردین؟ ‌ها؟ (ساسان سکوت می‌کند. حاج آقا با فریاد) اجرای حکم سنگسار آن زن هرزه را می‌گویم یزدانی! مردک خرفت، کم حافظه هم شدی؟

ساسان: من افتخار پیدا نکردم که چیزی از آن مراسم را ببینم. حالم به هم خورد. بیهوش شدم.

رستمی: ولی انشاالله در مراسم باشکوهی که برای شما اجرا می‌شه ابدأ فرصت غش کردن پیدا نمی‌کنین. تمام و کمال تماشا می‌کنین! بعد زوزه کشان مثل یک جفت سگ از دنیا میرین و به درک واصل می‌شین! (ساسان ترسیده عقب عقب می‌رود و حاج آقا او را تعقیب می‌کند) شما مثل همان علفهای هرزی هستین که بین گلها سبز میشن. شما رو باید ریشه کن کرد. (ساسان ترسیده به سرعت عقب عقب می‌رود و بعد دوان دوان دور می‌شود).

Visa is a book that the writer decided to pen when moved and inspired by the events that transpired in Iran during and after the Iranian Presidential elections of 2009. Despite the fact that this is a completely fictional tale, it finds its roots within the painful everyday events that happen in the present day Iranian society.
Purely by a play of faith, the writer after years of absence, found himself in Iran during the Iranian Presidential elections of 2009 and was able to witness up close and personally the excitement and enthusiasm amongst the Iranian youth, young men and women who were all participating fervently in these elections hoping for a better future for themselves and their country. What later became known as the Iranian Green Movement, a green wave that before being ruthlessly suppressed, swept across the country by standing steadfast against oppression and brutality while holding the promise of freedom and justice within its core.
This story revolves around the trials and tribulations an Iranian couple faced when attempting to seek asylum in the west to save their lives. This couple ends up tangling with British immigration and asylum laws. Within this process, they meet a court translator whom if not completely uninformed about events in today`s Iran, is certainly unfamiliar with having to live in an environment of fear and terror. It is here that they feel that they have to convince this and other court translators that their request is made on a humanitarian basis.
But they soon find that the court translator in the story is not what they had hoped or assumed. A man who came to Britain when very young and grew up in this country where he later began work as translator in the courts. A place where the only deciding factors are the law and finding the truth. A place where emotions and personalities carry little weight. Even humanitarian issues are sometimes ignored by the judges when certain documents that are presented take precedence. The law rules and nothing but the law and maybe that is the way it should be. The court interpreter in this story believes that he must do everything according to regulations. To him the hero in “Les Miserable’s” by Victor Hugo is not Jean Val Jean but his pursuer, the prosecutor Gavel.
The writer possesses ample information on the subject and is familiar with what has been transpiring in Iran. He attempts to follow the story from two opposing psychological perspectives. The refugees are portrayed under mental and physical pressure and squeezed by various external factors where many finally have to face bitter and sad destinies, while the interpreter finds himself torn between upholding the letter of the law or doing what his heart and conscience dictate. Sometimes these pressures tear at his soul and test his sanity.
But what will the end bring? What must he do? What can he do?
This story is the talk of the suffering and injustice that Iranian and other refugees face and deals with contradictions and world views and attitudes to legal issues growing up and living in two different societies bring about.
Massoud Kermani the writer was educated in Britain when he came to this country before the Islamic Revolution when he was a young man. He was active in the theatre and play writing in Iran but this is his first work after many years.
The author describes his goal in writing this book as bringing the Iranian people’s message of pain and suffering to the world and other Iranians across the globe. This book was published at the writer’s personal expense in both Farsi and English and is now ready for distribution for a low cover price of £6.
